Why is it so difficult? Why can’t I lose weight?
If to lose weight all you need to do is eat less and exercise more, then why do so many people find it so difficult to lose weight?
Obesity has rocketed since the 1970’s and most people blame todays lifestyle for the obesity epidemic which includes:
- A low fat, high carb diet
- Regular snacking
- Eating out
- Take aways
- Time in front of the TV
- Time gaming
- A big increase in sugar consumption
- Larger portion sizes
This is not the only part of the picture, yes these contribute to putting weight on but what stops us losing it when we change the habits?
Your Bodies Thermostat
Recent theories about weight gain suggest that extra calories eaten = weight gain. So, if you lower your food intake enough then you should lose weight.
This Theory Is Wrong!
Balancing The Energy Budget
Your body will step in and adapt, if you rapidly cut calories, by burning less calories. You become tired, cold and lethargic. Although you may initially lose weight, your metabolic rate will continue to drop to compensate.
This is built in to prevent swift death in time of food shortage. Even worse, you feel so bad you can’t take it any more and go back to eating more food. But your metabolic rate continues at its new lower rate so you put on even more weight than you had initially. Your unconscious mind is using hormones to control your metabolic rate, in a similar way to how the thermostat on your central heating works.
To make long term changes you can ensure you eat a reasonable sized meal.
Cut out sugar including
- Sugary Drinks
- Sugary Sauces
Cut out highly processed carbs
- White bread
- White Rice
Eat natural unprocessed foods wherever possible. Only eat at normal meal times, not snacking. Fast as this will short circuit the body’s response of increasing hunger and decreasing metabolic rate.
